Winston-Salem Mayor Named 2008 Distinguished Citizen

Allen Joines, Mayor of the City of Winston-Salem and President of the Winston-Salem Alliance, will be honored at the Distinguished Citizen Award dinner on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. The dinner will be at the Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem. North Carolina Secretary of Commerce, James T. Fain III, will be delivering the keynote address at the event.

This is the eighteenth year that the Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America has honored a distinguished citizen. Previous honorees include John G. Medlin Jr., Senator Richard Burr, A. Tab Williams, Jr.; Len B. Preslar, Jr.; John A. Allison IV; Clarence E. “Big House” Gaines; Murray C. Greason, Jr.; Dr. Richard H. Dean and C. Richard Vaughn. Last year’s honoree was J. Walter McDowell III.

“We are delighted that Allen Joines has been named the 2008 Distinguished Citizen,” stated Alan Proctor, chairman of the committee organizing the event. “He has contributed so much to our community over the last 37 years and we look forward to honoring him on May 13.”

Allen Joines has been contributing to the Winston-Salem business and civic community since 1971, when he began his career as Assistant to the City Manager. He subsequently held a variety of positions including Director of Evaluation, Public Safety Coordinator, the Director of Development and Deputy City Manager. During his time with the city, he worked with more than 30 companies that relocated or expanded in Winston-Salem, creating over 6,000 new jobs. He retired from the City of Winston-Salem in 2000 to become the President of The Winston-Salem Alliance, a non-profit development corporation created to improve economic vitality and create additional employment opportunities in Winston-Salem. He was elected Mayor of Winston-Salem in 2001 and re-elected in 2005.
