This hands-on program gives adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. Imagine having hands-on knowledge setting up a campsite, pitching a tent, hiking, outdoor cooking - all the skills necessary to see the outdoor program of the Boy Scouts of America come to life. |
The Old Hickory Council Conducts Introduction to Outdoor Skills (OLS) Training sessions 2 to 3 times a year at Camp Raven Knob, nestled in the mountains of northwestern North Carolina in Surry County just outside of Mt. Airy. The course begins around 8 am on Saturday morning and continues until around 2 pm on Sunday. Leaders participate in dynamic and hands-on activities throughout the 30 hour event. Leaders are organized into patrols and move throughout the reservation participating in classes designed to instill the scouting spirit - and a few great scout skills. OLS training helps leaders gain confidence in their ability - through hands-on, practical application of skills and proven methods - of influencing growth in positive ways to achieve the aims and purposes of the Boy Scouts of America. |

 | Interested adult leaders are requested to pre-register at least one week in advance of the event, cost is $25. This allows the course staff to better prepare for your arrival and stay at Camp Raven Knob. This time also gives the participant time to get together the required packing list items. It is important for everyone to "hold up their end" of the training to ensure a quality training event for all. The uniform for the event is Class A. |
