This course is aimed specifically at the adult Scouter to help develop the basic skills and knowledge needed to prepare for and conduct a paddling event with their troop or crew. The training staff is comprised of adult Scouters who are certified American Canoe Association and American Red Cross instructors.
It is normally conducted by the council at least once a year, and splits the course time between classroom work and practical exercise on a river. Training is conducted on High Adventure Trip Planning, Flat and Whitewater Paddling strokes, BSA Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat, and Basic Whitewater Rescue Techniques.
No previous experience is required. Participants must be registered Scouters, a BSA swimmer, and have a completed and current BSA medical form. Completion of New Leader Essentials and Position Specific Training prior to this course is highly recommended, but not required. Cost for the weekend (meals, lodging, classroom materials, and canoe rental) is normally around $55 - 65. Look at the Raven Online for more information, or look at the Training Events page for the next scheduled class.
