2021 Distinguished Citizen Award Recognition Event

2021 Distinguished Citizen Award Recipients Announced

Winston-Salem, NC, – The Old Hickory Council, Boy Scouts of America will hold its annual Distinguished Citizen Award event on Monday, October 18, 2021 at 12:00 noon to recognize two local members of the community who personify the spirit of Scouting.

Typically held as an in-person banquet, this year will be a virtual event. Community leaders, family, and friends will gather online to honor Carl S. Armato, President and Chief Executive Officer of Novant Health and Dr. Julie A. Freischlag, Chief Executive Officer of Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health, Dean of Wake Forest School of Medicine, and Chief Academic Officer of Atrium Health Enterprise. Both have had significant influence through a lifetime of service and leadership to their communities. Their passion and leadership are best described by the Boy Scout slogan, "Do A Good Turn Daily".

“Each year the honorees are chosen by vote of their peers who are past honorees and among the most significant leaders in our community,” said Drew Armstrong, Scout Executive/CEO of the Old Hickory Council. “The past two years have been some of the most extraordinary with a pandemic affecting us all, I can think of none more deserving of the award than the two local healthcare leaders in our region that have met the challenge of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic head-on.”

Armato and Freischlag join a group of honorees that recently includes Wake Forest University President Dr. Nathan Hatch; Dr. Gary Green, retired president of Forsyth Technical Community College; Kelly King, president of BB&T/Truist; and many more.

For 30 years, the Old Hickory Council, headquartered in Winston-Salem, has sought to recognize individuals in the community who are role models by his or her personal accomplishments and examples of what Scouting holds most important -- leadership and service to others. From the very first honoree in 1990, this important community event has raised more than $5 million for Scouting in northwest North Carolina.

Out of more than 260 Boy Scout Councils across the United States, the Old Hickory Council continues to be recognized as one of the premier councils in the nation. The council has been serving young people and their communities throughout the eight counties in northwest North Carolina with programs of leadership training, life skills development families, community service, and personal fitness for almost 110 years.
